John McWethy was the legitimate son of John J. Graham and of his wife, the former Mary Graham of Liberty Township, Butler Co., Ohio.. He would appear to have been born twenty-nine months after their marriage and for some reason he was given up for adoption-almost immediately. It is possible that Mary, or John, died-or that the young couple simply could not provide for their first infant.

John McWethy, adopted son and only heir of Stephen and Margaret McWethy of Dark Co., Ohio. John voluntarily enlisted in the Civil War, for 1 year, in 1865 and was mustered out Jan. 20 1866. Enlisted in union army in Greenville, Ohio. Unit-187th Ohio. His regiment was used in the mopping-up campaign following General Sherman's march to the sea. Described as: dark complexion with hazel eyes and dark hair. 5' 10" tall. Family moved to Friend, Saline Co., NB in 1873. In 1876 they moved south to Avilla, MO. In 1877, after wife Elizabeth died, the family moved to Duenweg, MO. (not far from Joplin). 1881 moved to Kansas. Lived with one of the 3 established older kids while raising the 3 younger kids. Moved back and forth between MO. KS, NB, & OK. By 1882 he is deaf (in 1 ear) and had few teeth-he applied for a pension. May 1912 began getting federal pension of $22.50 a month.
