The son of John Greenley and Sarah Buchter. Once he left home, Emanuel always used the spelling Greenly.

He married (first) Sarah Winkleman, about 1865; married (second) Mary M. Cain (1880); apparently married (third) Matilda, maiden name undetermined (after April 15, 1910.)

Emanuel served in Company C of the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Three brothers, Andrew, Samuel and Amos, also served in the Union Army. Later in life Emanuel was a member of Sumner Post No. 398, G. A. R., in Moravia, Iowa.

He died October 19, 1920, at Marshalltown.

The son of John & Sarah (Buchter) Greenly, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Jacob Rohrer in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster October 3, 1861, as a private with Co. C, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Unable to perform active duty, on April 28, 1864, he transferred to Co.
