Tunnel Hill, Buzzard's Roost Gap and Rocky Faced Ridge February 23-25. Battery Veteranized March 21. Veterans on furlough April 11 to June 5. Non-Veterans attached to Battery "I," 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. Battery mounted at Nashville, Tenn., and escort cattle and horses to army in the field till July 14, 1864. Moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., July 14-18. Mounted and engaged in scouting till October.

His widow, Dorothea Wilhelmina Unger Apitz, applied for a widow's pension. They were married in Prussia, May 24, 1845. They had a daughter, Clara, who was twelve years old at the time of the pension application in 1864. "Dores" was 38 years old. The pension ended with her death, Feb 26, 1907. They lived in an architecturally significant house as documented, 143 Congress Street West: Built in 1900. The structure is a two story, 1658 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom, aluminum/vinyl-sided house. The 1892 city directory indicates that Mr. and Mrs. Peter Leitner and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Leitner all resided at this address. Oakland Cemetery Association records indicate that Peter Leitner and Clara Leitner (1851-1892,) of German heritage who died of tuberculosis, husband and wife, resided at this address in 1892. The 1896 city directory indicates that Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Leitner and Mrs. D. Apitz all resided at this address. The 1898 and 1900 city directories indicate that J. P. Leitner resided at this address. Oakland Cemetery Association records indicate that Doris Apitz (1825-1907,) the widowed mother-in-law of John P. Leitner, who was born in Germany to parents also born in Germany and who died of an intestinal obstruction and old age, resided at this address in 1907 and that Bertha Maylone (1907-1907,) the daughter of Samuel V. Maylone, who was born in St. Paul to parents born in the United States and who died of acute gastro enteritis, also resided at this address in 1907.
