REV. DR. JOHN ABERLY was born on September 18, 1867 in Albrightsville, Carbon County, in eastern Pennsylvania. He began his formal education in a one-room schoolhouse in Polk Twp., Monroe County and graduated from Fairview Academy in Brodheadsville, PA in 1884. He then studied at Gettysburg College where he graduated as the salutatorian of his class in 1888, and also for one year in the Lutheran Theological Seminary. He and Alice Strauss of Gilbert, Pennsylvania were married August 3, 1889. They were called to serve the Lord as missionaries, and in November, 1889 they left for India and served there until 1923.

Dr. Aberly and his "dear wife" Alice worked as a team among the Telugu people of Guntur District. They cared for and helped educate two generations of Telugu Church leaders, pastors, Bible trained teachers, and gospel workers. Alice worked with boarding school children, women of the congregation, church music, and gave most gracious hospitality to many visitors. Dr. Aberly, though heavily burdened with parish work, administration of schools, and Bible teaching, edited various church periodicals in Telugu, commentaries for seven books of the Bible, and a complete Telugu Bible Dictionary which took 20 years to complete. His prodigious scholarly Telugu literary works and great teaching ability were, and still are, a gift to the Telugu Church.

Upon his return to the United States he became professor of Missions in the Chicago Maywood Lutheran Theological Seminary, a position he filled until 1926 when he came back to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg as its president and professor of systematic theology. He was president at Gettysburg from 1926 to 1940.

He was the author of a Telugu Bible dictionary and Telugu commentary on Mark, Acts, Romans and other books of the Bible. Among other books he authored was the Union Hymn Book.

He and his wife had two children: Amy and Fred H.
