According to papers found in his brother Peyton Ballenger's file (same company), a letter dated 20 November 1863 was written from Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC stating that Peyton be "granted a leave of absence of five days to carry home the dead body of his brother, D. Ballinger, late Lt in the same company".
