Obituaries

Andrew Roy Hogan, 81, of 607 Armit Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Wednesday, Feb 25, 1998 at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances.

Andy was born March 24, 1916 in International Falls, MN to William and Senja Hogan of Emo, Ont. His father was a pioneering entrepreneur who fell bankrupt in 1929. His mother was a young Finish immigrant who selflessly nurtured 12 children. As a boy, he clerked at "Sullivan's." After graduating Andy joined his brothers and worked in Fort William. He sent half of each paycheck home to help support the family.

During WWII, he served aboard escort vessels in the Atlantic as a wireless operator.

On Dec. 22, 1945, he married Kathleen Shanahan at Fort William. They moved to Fort Frances and began to raise a family. Andy ran the pavilion at Point Park one summer. He also operated a small grocery store on the corner of Scott and Armit, then moved a couple blocks downtown and created a mecca for coffee, comics, and confections at "Andy's Candy land."

Employed as an immigration officer, he sold the store and transferred to Rainy River. Andy purchased an 86 acre hobby farm three miles north and in his "spare time" cut pulp, cleared land and drained swamp; raised some cattle, pigs, and sheep; and grew, sold and gave away potatoes, strawberries and corn. He almost got up to 100 sheep. He would often bring back and nurse one or two lame or abandoned lambs in the backroom where there was just enough room for his bed and their box.

In 1971, he transferred back to Fort Frances and eventually retired as district supervisor.

During his retirement , he transformed a bush lot at Reef Point on Rainey Lake into a beautiful home with terraced gardens, long stone and earth walls, trails, and parkland. It was a home Andy and Kay built for their family and grandchildren, a home always shared with relatives and friends.

In 1988, they returned to town and restored an older two-story home. They cultivated a large garden, flower beds, and manicured grounds.

Andy was a past president of the Legion and Rotary clubs. He enjoyed bridge and cards, company, and neighbors. He was truly fond of their two small dogs, "Kee-Chee," then "Kandy."

Never a day wasted to illness.
Sharing however much or little he had.
Productive and generous from beginning to end.

The first to smile and greet you, and the last to say "Good-bye and thanks," once again.

Andy was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Francis and Joseph; two sisters, Phoebe and Lillian (Wicheruk); two half-sisters, Margaret and Muriel; and three half-brothers, Leo, Barney, and William.

Andy is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kay); his daughter, Susan and husband Allen Dahl. and their Children, Michael, Matthew, and Lindsey, all of Portage La Prairie, Man.; his son Jim and wife Sandy (Tolen), and their son, Steve, all of Wallaceburg, Ont.; and his son Dave, of Fort Frances.

Also surviving are seven brothers and sisters, Art (Verna) of Vancouver, B.C., Gordon (Mabel) of Thunder Bay, Senja (William) Faber of Thunder Bay, Sister Mary Columbia of Chatham, Josephine (Paul) Vaudrin of Crookston, Patricia (Mello) Schiebel of Kitchener, and Doreen (John) Desrochers, of Montreal, Que.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service officiated by Father Lawrence Conlon was held Monday, March 2, 1998 at St. Mary's Church in Fort Frances. Interment is planned for Mountain View Cemetery in Thunder Bay.

Honorary pallbearers were Harold and Irene Herrem, Charles and Mary Stuart, Anne Eustace, Martha Allan, Laura Mitchell, and Florence Bonner.
