Obituary taken from the Owensboro Messen-
ger Dec 25, 1920: Winfield Scott Ray, age 83,
Confederate veteran, died at his home on W.
Second Street Friday night quite suddenly
after retiring. He was born in Garrard Co.
He married Sarah Sebastian in 1868 in Garrard
Co., then lived in the Habit neighborhood of
Daviess Co. where he lived until about ten
years ago when he moved to Philpot. He
later sold his home there and moved to
Owensboro. In the Civil War he served under
Cpt.Forrest in Co. H,8th Ky Regiment through-
out the war. He was a member of the
Christian Church and a highly respected
citizen with many friends. Surviving are
his widow, five daughters; Mrs. Ephraim
Reynolds, Owensboro, Mrs. Lum Sutherland,
Masonville, Mrs. James Ray, Rose Hill,
Mrs. Herman Gill, Rock Island, IL, Miss
Mary Ray of Owensboro, four sons; William
Ray of Pleasant Valley, Scott and Morton
Ray of Owensboro & Charles Ray of Philpot.
Winfield had 17 grandchildren & two great
grandchildren. The funeral will be con-
ducted at the Thruston Baptist Church &
interment following in the church cemetery.
