Dick was born to James Ervin and Mattie Lou Hightower Blackstock. He grew up in Ruston, Louisiana and had the following sisters: Ruth B. Moffett, Lois B. Johnson, Nell B. Hockenjos; brothers: W.J. "Billy" Blackstock, and Bennie Sanders.

Married Margaret Williams in April 1943. They had the following children: James Richard "Ricky", Jerry Allen, Steven Kimbell, and Terri Lynn. Dick adored his grandchildren. He was a painting contractor in Ruston, LA. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Terri Lynn.

Uncle Dick also was a member of Ruston's Louisiana National Guard Battery F, 204th Coastal Artillery (Anti-Aircraft)and faithfully attended every roll call reunion he could.

He passed away from complications of lung cancer at Lincoln Memorial Hospital. He is buried with Terri Lynn, wife Margaret and his father, Ervin in Unionville Cemetery in Lincoln Parish.
