Hap served from November 25, 1942 to January 22, 1946 in the European Theater of Operations. He was a 1st Lt. in the 3rd Army Staff of Engineers. He served in Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes, Normandy and Central Europe. In 1952, he was also commissioned a Captain in the Corps of Engineers in the Officers' Reserve Corps.
In civilian life, he was a Civil Engineer and loved to travel. He had a long term relationship with Myra Ann Price Presley, but they never married. He had 1 brother, Henry Ireton and 2 half-sisters.
Hap had one of the first open heart surgeries performed in Houston, Texas.
