Jacob Adolf, 82, died September 11, 1997 at the North Big Horn County Hospital after a long illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday September 15, 1997 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lovell. Elder Dean L Larsen an emeritus General Authority of the church, and former resident of Lovell, Byron, and Worland will be the main speaker. Burial will follow at the Lovell Cemetery under the direction of the Haskell Funeral Home.
Jake was born June 8, 1915, in Bridger, Montana, the eighth of 10 children born to Marie Bauer and Gottfrid Adolf. He spent his early years traveling with his large family working in the farm fields of Montana, Idaho, and northern Wyoming. He began school in Sunlight, then Kane, and completed his schooling in Lovell.
He married Fernith Allred in Lovell, April 21, 1937 the daughter of J. Orvel Allred and Iva Gifford. Jake and Fern were blessed with six children, Patricia Gail, Linda Kay, Barbara Lee, Barton Jacob, Darlene, and Gregory Jay.
He retired from the Great Western sugar factory in Lovell. However, much of his career was spent working as a welder for the Ohio Oil Company (now Marathon Oil) at the Lovell refinery. When the refinery closed he worked in the oil fields as an independent welder. He then worked as a welder for the Husky refinery in Cody.
One of Jake's greatest loves was music, and he was a talented musician. He was an accomplished drummer, harmonica player, and played the guitar, piano, and accordian as well. Many happy hours were spent musically around campfires with family and friends.
Beginning in the 1940's he led a well known 10 piece orchestra known as "Jake Adolf and his Orchestra," playing for community, church, and school dances in Wyoming and Montana for over twenty years. A number of prominent members of the group were, Arden Durfee, Bill Powell, Doyle Moncur, Lyle Moncur, Van Johnson, Ivan Tippetts, Avery Glenn, Ralph Erickson, George Whitney, Al Mclauskey, and Art Haney.
A prominent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held numerous leadership positions throughout the Big Horn Basin relating to missionary work. He was honored in 1972, by the First Quorum of the Seventy of the church for 20 years of missionary service. In 1980-1982, he an his wife Fernith served a full time mission in Germany, the country of his ancestors. In 1992, the Ensign Magazine, with several million readers, published an article "Jake Adolf's Big Horn Basin Mission", giving a detailed account of this beloved man's 40 years of service.
Jacob was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, 1 grandson, and 1 great granddaughter.
Jacob is survived by his wife Fernith, and brother, Henry Adolf of Lovell and sister Margaret Brown of Kearns, Utah. Surviving are 6 children, Gail Allphin, Stark City, MO (Lee); Linda Johnson, Neosho, MO; Barbara Skinner, Lovell, WY (Darrell); Bart Adolf, Cody, WY; Darlene Beasley, Hendersonville, NC (Ben); Greg Adolf, Milwaukie, OR (Vicki); 26 grandchildren, and 36 great grandchildren.
