"Pere" is not his middle name - "pere" is the French word for "father" and was used at the time Alexis and his son were living in the old French settlement of Besancon near New Haven , Indiana, to differentiate between Alexis, pere, and his son. The terms Sr. and Jr. are terms added by people in more modern times. The term "pere" is even used on the stained glass windows in the church next to this cemetery where Alexis and family are buried. They were among the settlers who built the church and raised money for the windows. "pere" is their choice
