Hazleton Plain Speaker; Wednesday, February 22, 1939:
'Hazleton's 'Grand Old Woman' Recalls Stirring Days of Civil War'
Today is the ninetieth birthday anniversary of Mrs. Anna Catherine Otter, who lives at 539 North Church street. Tonight the family will hold a party for her. Mrs. Otter is in fine physical condition aside from her sight not being as good as it was years ago. She is around her home every day and is quite active, helping with the housework and other duties. She is a member of Christ Lutheran church and for many years was a leader in work in that congregation. Her maiden name was Miss Anna Catherine Buchenau and she was a member of a pioneer family which included the late Squire Henry A. Buchenau. She is the last of her family.

She was born in Germany and came to Crystal Ridge with her parents when she was three years old. The family moved to Hazleton four years later so she has been a resident of Hazleton 83 years.

Mrs. Otter recalls the stirring days of the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and the World War with equal interest and she lived through the growth of Hazleton from a small mining village to a good sized city. She recalls the birth of the telephone, the airplane, the submarine, graphophone, electric light, radio and the growth of the railroads and their chief competitor today, the automobile.

She was 23 years old when she became the bride of the late Valentine Otter, who died 39 years ago. They were the parents of nine children, eight of whom are still living. They will gather tonight with eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren for the family gathering where Hazleton's 'Grand Old Lady' will be guest of honor.
