Ila Dastrup Childs, 101, passed away peacefully on January 7, 1997 in Salt Lake City, after a lifetime of independence, dignity, and grace.


Third of nine children, she was born March 18, 1895 in Sigurd, Utah Territory to Jacob and Pauline Larsen Dastrup.


After a formal education in Sigurd, she received her Bachelors degree in 1923 and Masters degree in 1931 from Brigham Young University. She taught in public schools during the 1920's in Arizona, Idaho, and Utah. She moved to Gunnison, Utah after her marriage to Clifford Howard Childs on June 18, 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple. Subsequent to his death on December 29, 1968, she made her home in Salt Lake City.


An active member of the LDS Church, Ila devoted many years to genealogy and temple work. She mastered the arts of gardening, sewing and cooking She cultivated an impressive talent for painting, producing many cherished landscapes for family and friends. An avid reader, she kept abreast of current events and displayed a keen intellect and uncanny memory of a century of history. She was a devoted care giver to anyone in need, never expecting or desiring anything in return.


Until a fall four months ago, she lived alone, enjoying a healthy and vigorous life.


She is survived by sons, Clifford H. (Vena) Childs, Russell D. (Karen) Childs; stepdaughters, Ida C. Brown, Maxine Childs, Beth C. Hill, Jean C. (George) Stamos, Clay Childs, all of Salt Lake City; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 24 great great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Thelma D. McDonald. She was preceded in death by stepdaughter, Ila C. Lovell.


Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Bonneville Ward Chapel, 1535 East Bonneview Drive (1050 South), Salt Lake City. Friends may call on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Salt Lake Mortuary, 255 South 200 East, and at the Ward Chapel from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment will be held in the Gunnison City Cemetery at 3 p.m.
