Mary Hedrick married Phillip Carroll on Dec. 27, 1859. Their marriage license shows her name as Hendricks. When they married, the president was James Buchanan (1857 – 1861). They homestead a section of land located two miles north of Shirley, IN.

Mary and Phillip had seven children:
Eli, Infant (daughter), Henry, Charles, Sarah E., Sophia Ann, Margaret Jane (Meg)
