Funeral service for Floyd Barnhart, long time Vocational Agriculture teacher in the Caruthersville High School died Saturday night, June 7 at the Pemiscot Medical Center where he had been a medical patient since May 30. He was 79.
Mr. Barnhart was born September 6, 1895 at Carthage, Mo., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamine F. Barnhart. He graduated from Carthage High School and in mid-year 1921-22 with a BS in Agriculture from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He majored in Vocational Agriculture.
Mr. Barnhart came to Caruthersville February, 1922 and he often had remarked that it was on Groundhog Day and was miserably cold day to take over the CHS Vocational Agriculture Department. During his 37 years as a teacher he saw that department rank among the top high school Vocational Ag. departments in the state of Missouri and his students win honors to district and state contests. He retired from active teaching October 31, 1960.
While attending the University of Missouri he was active in campus activities and was a member of the MU Glee Club, singing a lead tenor. After coming to Caruthersville he used that talent as a member of the Eastwood Memorial Methodist Church choir, and was also called on for sale work at various civic occasions and he always gave freely of his time and talent.
He was a charter member of the Caruthersville Rotary Club and had served that group at least one term as president. He was also the music director for many years in that club.
While serving as a Vocational Agriculture teacher in the local schools he wrote a textbook on Cotton which was used as a standard textbook in Missouri and also used as a reference and textbook in other states. He was first published in 1949 and then revised and republished in 1952. He also published a textbook on Soybeans after 1952.
On March 8, 1930 he uas united in marriage in Caruthersville to Miss Thelma Brent, who survived him. They lived on Mooreland Drive. Also survived are one brother, Garrett Barnhart of New Bloomfield, Mo., and one sister, Mrs. J.U. (Esther) Morris, Columbia, Mo., also a niece, Mrs. Ann Holshouser, and a grand niece, Lisa Holshouser, of Nashville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, June 9, at 2:30 at the Methodist Church with a former pastor here, Rev. Floyd V. Brower of Sikeston, and the pastor Rev. Allan Vancil, conducting the services. Interment was in the Maple Cemetery with Dean Funeral Home in charge.
