She had been married 68 years to the late Norman E. Algier who died in 1998. Born October 6, 1908 in Enola, PA she was the daughter of the late Aaron G. and Emma Thomas McCowan.
Mrs. Algier was a member of the Covenant United Methodist Church and the James Buchanan Chapter of the Eastern Star #315. She was a graduate of Downingtown High School and Banks Business College in Philadelphia. Helen worked at Downingtown Manufacturing while living in Downingtown.
Helen enjoyed playing pinochle and games with her friends at Landis Homes. She also like jigsaw puzzles and most every day she went out to lunch.
Surviving are two daughters, Norma Cahill of Holden, MA and Mary Ann wife of Earl Tolin of Leola, PA; six grandchildren, Mark Cahill of Sutton, MA, Craig Cahill of Worcester, MA, Christopher Cahill of Medfield, MA, Gary Tolin of Southbury, CT, Jeffrey Tolin of Rothsville, PA and Kristi Pickel of Anchorage, AK; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Aaron and George and by five sisters, Eleanor, Marian, Mildred, Ruth and Grace.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the West Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA with the Rev. Donald W. Good and the Rev. Ted Mefford officiating. Friends may call at Landis Homes on Monday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Algier's memory may be made to Landis Homes Caring Fund, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543 or to Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 North Mulberry Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.
