Simon was born and raised in Mendon, Utah. In April 1884, Simon and his older brother, Jesse, decided to go to the Upper Snake River Valley. The settled in Teton where each brother filed on 160 acres of farmland south east of the townsite and secured 2 and a half acre building lots in town. They built two log cabins with board floors and dirt roofs. Simon returned to Cache Valley and married Sarah Jane Bassett on October 2, 1884 in the Logan Temple. They returned to Teton and became parents to two children: a son, Ward Bassett and a daughter, Lucy Luella.
Simon and Sarah built a two-room log home, had a good garden, and were clearing the land of high sage brush. Simon hauled water for the house and livestock in barrels from the river. An irrigation canal was started so they could cultivate more of the land.
The men were hauling rock and cutting small trees and willows to build a dam in the river to back up the water and get it to flow down a ditch they had plowed out with hand plows and shoveled out by hand. Because Simon was a great swimmer, he was elected to swim across the river taking a tow line to pull trees across which would fall into a pattern against driven pegs. He had made several crossings when the others heard him yell, "Help! Help me!"
Simon drowned that day. Several days later his body was recovered a mile or so downstream. He was buried in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery.
