Oscar Elias BAKER,

Parents: Rev. George Washington BAKER and Louisa Decker (Davis) BAKER; Oscar's grandfather, Hon. Eber BAKER, was one of the founders of the town of Marion, OH.
He as his father, were Free Will Baptist ministers. Oscar was licensed to preach when he was 17 yrs old. And by his nineteenth birthday, he was ordained by the Free Will Baptist church, because of his work and dedication. From time to time he endeavored to go to college, but the demands of the churches interferred with his plans.
Meanwhile he applied himself to study and with the aid of private teachers aquired at length an elective collegiate and theological course.
In 1850 he was married to Jane Powell, of Marion, OH. They had a son and a daughter. Jane died an early death, and in 1860, Rev. Baker married Mrs. Augusta Wilson. They had one daughter, Lou.
Rev. Baker preached in Ohio, moved to Iowa and became pastor of Wilton Junction church, and took charge of the seminary at that place. The seminary grew into a college of which he became president. His health failing, he resigned. Then he took charge of the church at Waterloo, IA. In 1881 he was called to the church in Marion, OH, his native city. In 1884, he accepted a call to the Roger Williams church, Providence, R.I. where he remained unti 1888, when he was called to Lincoln, Nebraska. He served his denomination for many years through the several benevolent societies and as a member of the Board of Corporators of the Printing Establishment. He was a frequent contributor to the denominational papers.
