He and his brother Delaware taught at their father William's Alexandria Boarding School, a Prep school for the University of Virginia, from approx. 1858 to 1861. (William was a former Professor and Chairman of the Board Of Visitors at the Univ. of Virginia. He was also Captain, Assistant QuarterMaster, paymaster for the C.S.A. Richmond Hospitals 1862-1865.)
Postwar, he was Superintendent of Alexandria public schools.

Enlisted in 1861, he was mustered into Company I, 1st Battalion South Carolina Light Artillery. This Battalion became the 1st South Carolina Heavy Artillery with the addition of other Companies by 2/1862.
Appointed 1/2/1862 as a 1st Lieutenant.
Transferred 2/3/1863 from Company I to Company E.
Detached duty with Company I Sept & Oct 1863 Roll.
Signed Nov & Dec 1863 Roll as 1st Lt., Commanding Company E.
Absent, With Leave Jan & Feb 1864 Roll.

The 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment was organized during the fall of 1861 using the 1st South Carolina Artillery Battalion as its nucleus. Most of the officers and men were from the Charleston area.
