Enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in Co. G, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 23 July 1862 at the age of 41. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 19 December 1862 and to Captain and Commanding Officer of Co. G on 19 March 1863. Mustered out on 30 June 1865 at Nashville, TN.
