Dorcas Elizabeth "Honey" Carter, of Hampton, VA (formerly of New Bern, North Carolina) died at the Commonwealth Assisted Living Facility, Hampton, VA. After graduating from the historic West Street High School, "Honey", continued her education at State Normal School in Elizabeth City, NC. She earned her BS Degree in Elementary Education from Winston Salem Teachers College, Winston Salem, NC and her Master's Degree from Boston University, Boston, MA. With 39 years of dedicated service, she retired from F.R. Danyus School. She was an avid historian and was the source for ancestral information regarding her family on Portsmouth Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Her ability to console and mentor others was shared freely, this could be seen in her services as a Gray Lady at Craven County Hospital. Dorcas was an active, lifetime member of Saint Peters A.M.E. Zion Church where she served in numerous capacities including: Junior Choir and Senior Choir member, Assistant Superintendent, Assistant Church Clerk, Church Secretary, and a Consecrated Deaconness since February 19, 1967.

A memorial service and burial was held at the Evergreen Cemetery, New Bern, NC.
