HAMPTON - James Rudolph "Rudy" Carter passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017. He was born in New Bern, NC on November 8, 1921 to the late Sylvester and Olivia Carter.

Shortly after graduating from West Street High School, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific during WWII.

With his bachelor's degree from Hampton Institute (University), he gained employment at Langley Air Force Base where he served the federal government for 45 years, retiring as an Engineering Technician in 1996. He was also a self-employed professional who was well known on the Peninsula as an exceptional, reliable electrical contractor.

Rudy was a proud Montford Point Marine and on June 27, 2012, he and more than 400 other Montford Pointers went to Washington, DC where they were awarded the long-overdue Congressional Gold Medal. He was a member of the Hampton University Booster Club and Alumni Association, the Beau Brummell Social and Civic Club, and a Diamond Life Member of the NAACP.

He was married to the late Erma Doris Cones, and from their union, they had three children. Rudy later married Celestine Diane Wynder and enjoyed 42 wonderful years together.

Rudy leaves to cherish beautiful memories his devoted wife; daughters, Dr. Deborah Carter Fontaine and Teri J. Carter of Hampton, VA; son, Robert "Rusty" Carter (his wife, Brenda) of Chester, VA; three grandsons, Robert "Bobby" Fontaine (his wife, Crystal) Spencer Pilgrim and Ryan Carter; one great-grandson, Justin Fontaine. He also leaves a step great-grandson, Brandon Maren, a god-daughter, Iris V. Mann and nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and associates.

Viewing will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen Street, Hampton.

A funeral service will held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 24, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 171 Semple Farm Road, Hampton. Church viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. Deep appreciation is extended to the staff of the Intrepid Healthcare and Hospice agency for their prompt and compassionate care for our dear Rudy.

Interment will be in the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Point Road, Jacksonville, NC on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton University Booster Club in memory of Rudy Carter, P.O. Box 243, Hampton, VA 23669.
