Christian Hagemann --- Chilton Times --- May 21, 1898

Gone to his last long rest, one of our pioneers, Chris. Hagemann. The deceased was born in Hanover, in January, 1828. The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon. The G.A.R. Post, relatives and friends escorted the corpse to the German Reformed church, where Rev. Theo. Schildknecht preached the funeral sermon, followed by several songs sung by the church choir. We extend the sympathy of friends

Christian Hagemann was one of a dozen New Holsteiners who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. A member of Wisconsin's 26th Infantry, Co. E, a company made up largely of German immigrants, Christian entered the Union forces as a private on August 19, 1862 and had attained the rank of sergeant at the time he was mustered out on June 15, 1865. What was his motovation for entering into a war in his adopted country? Was it ideological, or simply a means of solving the economic requirements of his family?
