PHOEBE JANE LEMLEY
Phoebe Jane Lemley of Centerville, Iowa, was born Dec. 16, 1853 and departed this life July 14, 1949, aged 95 years, 6 months and 28 days.
Born in West Virginia, the family of Mr. Mahlon Cross and Mrs. Mercy Cross, moved to Iowa in 1856, locating on a farm near Walnut City in Appanoose County, where she spent her childhood days. Early in life she united with Concord Baptist Church and lived a faithful Christian life.
In 1872 she united in marriage with Josephus Lemley, who preceded her in death in 1937. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, Arthur R. who died in 1939 and Mahlon J. who lives near Hemingford, Nebraska, Mrs. Ruthella Morlan of Centerville, Iowa and Mrs. Mercy Carter of Ashtabula, Ohio.
The family moved to Monroe County soon after her marriage and lived on a farm until 1912 when they moved to Russell, Iowa, where they lived for many years.
She had seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. One great-grandchild preceded her in death.
Funeral services were at the Woodman Funeral Home in Russell, Ia. July 16, 1949 at 2 p.m. and burial beside her husband in the Russell Cemetery. Rev. Archie Beals conducted the service. Pallbearers were Leslie Lemley, Lynn Lemley, Floyd Morlan, Ray Morlan, Beverly Moore and Larry Lemley, relatives of the deceased.
