Sylvia's mother divorced her husband when Sylvia was quite little. Although in Texas in 1900, it is believed that her mother may have lived on the gold fields in Alaska following her divorce, although whether Sylvia was with her is unknown. By 1910 Sylvia was living with her mother and new step-father, Andrew (Andreas) P. Garberg in Nevada.

Sylvia Flanigan married Oscar Hedman in Spokane, Washington. When their funds were completely depleted by his medical issues, she arranged for her husband to be admitted to the Washington Veterans' Home in Retsil in 1951. After Mr. Hedman passed away later that year, Mrs. Hedman relocated to Barrego Springs, California, located in what she called "a very agreeable corner of San Diego, California."

She died in Spokane Washington in February 1979. An obituary was published in the Spokesman Review on Sunday, Feb. 25, 1979, page D1: HEDMAN, Sylvia -- Passed away Feb. 23, 1979 in Spokane. Her home Spokane. Survived by one son, Richard T. Hedman, Spokane; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
