Mary Idalee Whelan Ray, 99, of Springfield died at 9:20 a.m. Friday at St. John's Hospital.

Born in Stithton, Ky., Mrs. Ray was the daughter of Daniel and Sarah Bryan Whelan. Her husband James S., died in 1976. One son, Joseph H., and three daughters, Mary, Gladys and Ruby, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Ray was a member of St. Cabrini Church.

Surviving are one son, James I. Ray of Springfield; four daughters, Mrs. Elsie M. Albright, Mrs. Eloise M. Hill and Mrs. Lillian D. Kennedy, all of Springfield, and Mrs. Charlotte L. Theobald of Janesville, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Strauel of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Mary Jo Thomas of Indianapolis, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.

Services: St. Cabrini Church, the Rev. Edward Groesch officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery.
