Abraham Birks, 70, of Harristown was drowned Tuesday when the car in which he was riding with his wife struck a culvert on the Twin Lakes road and skidded over a 10 foot embankment and overturned in a ditch containing four feet of water. Mrs. Birks was take to Decatur and Macon county hospital shortly before midnight suffering from shock, minor cuts and bruises.

The accident occurred near Twin Lake bridge and they were returning to their home in Harristown. It is believed Mr. Birks suffered a stroke causing him to drive off the road into the culvert. Friends said he had been in failing health for some time. The body was recovered by a farmer living nearby. One of the car doors was open but Mr.Birks had made no effort to get out.

He was a retired farmer and he had made his home in Harristown for the past 25 years. He leaves his wife, a brother, one son Lynn Birks and two daughters, Mrs. Charlie Kontz of Decatur and Mrs. Henry Bruce of Niantic.
