~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following an intermittent illness of several months, though serious only the last few weeks, Mrs. Margaret E. Birks, 66 years old, wife of John V. Birks, well known in this city, died in the family home, 1145 North Edward street, last night at 6:30 o'clock of uremic poisoning. She had been in failing health for several months but her conditions had become serious only in the last few weeks. Her suffering was intense, but characteristic of the life she had led, the brave woman withstood the pain and never once complained.
Mrs. Birks had lived in Decatur more than 20 years, moving to this city from the farm near Harristown to retire.
She leaves besides her husband, two sons and one daughter. They are Elmer V. Birks of Illini township, Abraham C. Birks of Harristown and Mrs. Carrie Phillips of Arthur. She also leaves two sisters, Mary A Gilbert of Woodbine, Ia. and Sarah J. Moomey of Mt. Pulaski; one brother, Edward Copeland of Mt. Pulaski; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The well known woman was born and reared in Illinois. She was born in Logan county, Dec. 4, 1845. Early in life, she united with the Christian church and had always led a Christian life. Several years ago, she joined the Central Church of Christ and had been an active worker in the church.
Mrs. Margaret Birks was greatly admired by her friends. She was self sacrificing and kind and would go out of her way to accommodate a neighbor or friend. She was motherly in all her work which is attested by the fact that when her daughter, Mrs. Barbara A.Lawrence died several years ago, she took her small granddaughter, who is now Mrs. Fred Bloomquist, into her home and reared her. Many other traits of character made the hundreds who were acquainted with the woman, love her.
