Judge Helmuth F. Arps, 71, circuit judge for Winnebago and Calumet Counties from 1948 until his retirement in 1962, died early this morning at Calumet Memorial Hospital. He had been ill about three weeks.
A resident of 816 S. Madison St., Chilton, he continued his residence here during his judicial service. He was appointed circuit judge and later elected to finish the term of Henry P. Hughs, who was appointed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. He declined a third term in 1962 because of the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Judge Arps earlier from 1916-23 served four terms as district attorney of Calumet County before appointment as county judge there. He was elected and re-elected county judge before entering private practice in 1932.
He was born in New Holstein on May 2, 1892, son of Fred and Frederica Arps, and was married in Kiel to Elsie Neumann on September 1, 1916. He attended the University of Wisconsin, and received his bachelor of laws degree at the University of Michigan in 1915. He was a member of the Consistory and Tripoli Shrine. Surviving are his wife Elsie; and one brother, Bruno F. Arps, New Holstein.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home in Chilton with burial in the New Holstein City Cemetery
