Frederick Arps The Sheboygan Press June 15, 1940

New Holstein, Wis—(Special) –Frederick Arps passed away at his home on Washington Street Friday evening after being ill for the past six weeks.
Deceased was born January 12, 1862 the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Arps on the homestead in Town of New Holstein. On December 13, 1888 he was married to Miss Fredericka Hansen of Town of Eaton, and they resided on the Arps homestead now owned by Henry Depies until 1916 when they moved to their present home in New Holstein. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary on December 13, 1938 and his wife preceded him in death on January 8, 1939.
For a number of years Mr. Arps conducted a private gunsmith shop at his home as a hobby. In 1896 he received a patent on an automatic rifle which was on the same principle as the new Garand army rifle now in use. He also received several other patents on firearms. He was always noted as a great hunter and fisherman. He was treasurer of the Calumet County Mutual Fire Insurance company for 35 years and a member of the New Holstein Sharpshooters' club for 30 years. For a period of 20 years he served as vice president of the Arps Corporation here in New Holstein and also as a member of the village council for several years.
Survivors are two sons, Bruno F. of New Holstein and Helmuth F. of Chilton, two grandchildren, Eleanor and Frederick, one brother, Charles of Milwaukee, two sisters, Mrs. Henry Weber of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Henry Schmidt of New Holstein.
Funeral services will be at the Erbe-Hoffman Funeral home, and burial will be made in the New Holstein City Cemetery.
