Tom was 17 years old when the Lord called to join him in heaven. At the age of 13 Tom was hired to work with the railroad in La Tuna, TX. He also worked as a light truck driver hauling lumber for a Los Alamos Construction Co.

PVT Tom entered the military on June 13, 1946 and trained at Camp Lee, Virginia and received training in military courtesy close order drill and the employment of rifles and hand grenades.
