Bennett Joy Dean was born at 210 Avery Avenue in Detroit to Anna L. (Clarkson) and Bennett L. Dean. Ben grew up in Detroit where his father was a local postal delivery man. Ben had an older brother, a younger brother as well as two younger sisters.
   Ben graduated from Detroit's Northwestern High School in 1922 and moved to Southern California in 1924.
    After working for a few different Banks before and after his move to California, Ben began work for Southern California Edison in July 1926 as an Apprentice Sub Station Operator. He married the following November to Lillian Elizabeth Mills in Glendale.
   One of Ben's many hobbies was stamp collecting and he specialized in ship cancelled covers of the 1930's. He was member No. 182 of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society.
   In 1937 he was received into the Torrance Masonic Lodge #447. In 1940 he received an Amateur Radio Operator License.
   Ben Joined the Merchant Marines during WWII but was prevented from going to sea by his employer (So. Cal. Edison) who claimed he was too necessary as they were so short handed during the War and SCE prevented him from going to sea. On 28 Dec 1943 Bennett enrolled as a member of the Volunteer Port Security Force of the U.S. Coast Guard from which he was honoarably discharged at the rank of Cox. September 1945.
   He was a member of the Toastmasters Club (Charter No. 72). He joined OES, Scepter Chapter, No.163, of Orange in 1945....
   In 1969 Ben retired from Southern California Edison as area station chief, southeast substation division, after 42 years of service. During his retirement, Ben enjoyed traveling and lawn bowling....
