Owen was born in England and came with his parents and brother to the United States in 1842, landing at Galveston. He learned to read on the trip over by reading the Bible. Owen was known as a healer. He married Mary Jane Cooper and they had eight children. John Henry died at age 3 and since John Burton wanted his name to continue, Owen named a second son John, against the wishes of Mary Jane. Although against slavery, Owen enlisted in the service of the Confederate States of America in February, 1862, and served "Honorably" as a "Private" in Company "I", 13th Texas "Dismounted Cavalry", "Flowernaughts", C.S.A. He was a Corporal when he was discharged.
