Detroit Vet Is Buried
J. R. Medlin Succumbs On Thursday Night; Last Rites Held Friday
DETROIT - Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Detroit for J. R. Medlin, Detroit's last Confederate veteran. Services were conducted by the Rev. P. F. Herndon of Paris at the home of Claud Council, Mr. Medlin's son-in-law. Burial was at Friendship cemetery, near Biardstown.
Mr. Medlin came to Lamar county about 1875 and was married to Miss Belle Ratliff in 1878. She died in 1902. He is survived by five of their children, Jack R. Medlin of Arcadia, La., Mrs. S. D. Hearn of Roscoe, Mrs. R. S. Crossley of Denton, Mrs. Claud Council of Detroit and Mrs. W. W. Johnson of Anson. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. O. W. Ludwick, Mrs. J. W. DeWeese and Miss Eula Ratliff of Paris.
He was born near Raleigh, N. C., November 9, 1846 and served throughout the Civil War. He had served as the first county judge of Clay county and later as sheriff of that county.
Pallbearers were Harve Light of Ladonia, Paul M. Gunn of Clarksville, Richard Morgan, H. F. Sharpe, Travis Tonly and Donly Tonly.
