(CORRESPONDENCE OF THE KENTUCKIAN. 1875

Died after a short illness on the 24th of December. 1875. at the residence of her brother. J. H. Chandler. Miss Emma V. Chandler. of pneumonia. in the 28th year of her age.
The subject of this notice had been an active and influential member of the Baptist Church for the past year. Her many rebukes to the erring and unrighteous, her deeds of charity and mercy. coupled with the pious and blameless life she led. evinced the truth of her acceptance with God. For several years before she united herself to the Church of Christ. she was an earnest seeker of religion, and afterwards the burden of her prayer was to know her master's will. After years of close social and domestic intercourse with this young lady. the writer of these lines is prepared to testify to her many inherent virtues and her unusual assemblage of mental endowments. Nature had been wonderfully kind to her. bestowing upon her the choicest of her gifts. such as a clear, discriminating conscience. a sound judgment. a quick. clear and concise manner of thinking and writing; and to this high order of mind was added a superior educational training, which made her a most apt and excellent teacher, in which occupation she was engaged at the time of her death.
This estimable young lady leaves behind a vast number of friends and relatives who will sadly miss her and mourn her loss with a grief so deep that it cannot soon be comforted. All earthly friendships are destined to rude shocks of sorrow and mourning as well as any other of the less ennobling of the human emotions. Death robs us of our treasures. one by one--placing all that is mortal beneath the sods of the valley, and bearing with lightning speed to eternity all that is the mortal--thus teaching us the fact that life is very short and exceedingly uncertain, and at the same time admonishing to us, as with the voice of the great I Am. to prepare for our coming dissolution.
As I stood above the cold clay temple of our departed friend, and looked upon her features so calmly composed in death. I thought surely Christ had not been crucified in vain; and, while the whole inner man was shaken to the very center with severe grief, we were enabled to exclaim. "Thy will be done Perhaps this dart of death was hurled in our midst to call someone of her many kinsmen to labor in the vieyard of God. Let none of us reject the lesson that such a death must teach. It is one that all must learn; and it is a mighty. universal truth that when death strikes down the young and innocent. for every fragile form from which he lets the panting spirit free a hundred virtues rise in shapes of mercy, charity and love; to walk the world and bless it with their light. It has been aptly said. "There are some few ministering angels in female guise among us all. and about our paths. who sweetly serve to cheer and adorn life", and such was our dead one. Though the grave has closed over her. and the "places that knew her once shall know her no more", and a multitude of years shall roll on and on to eternity. vet the memory of her good deeds shall live after her forever!
Yes. we know we shall meet thee again, when all the earth shall teem with her "buried millions"--when the dead in Christ shall rise first. and the redeemed on earth shall be caught up to meet God in the air. Then shall we see thee, clothed in bright raiments of light and life!

The above obituary was printed in its entirety because of the content and language which is unique. compared with the brief obituaries of today. Miss Chandler was also a member of Ricket's Lodge No. 1.173 I.O.G.F. and a tribute to her was also published with resolutions of a committee. composed of R. H. Martin. Louis Price. Annie Colvin. Gay Price and Bettie Moore. and signed by N. Wood. W.C.T. and W. B. Samuels. Secretary.
