Sumner was the son of Levi Wiggins and Elizabeth Morton. He married Lydia Frances Cleveland (1844 WI - 1929 WA, daughter of Benjamin A Cleveland and Octavia Wentworth) on 15 November 1868 in Green Co, Wisconsin. They were the parents of Edith and Nellie. They divorced before 1880. He married 2nd Mary Ora Smith on March 16, 1881 in Iowa Co, WI. They were the parents of Elsie C (1883), Walter Milo (1883-1960, Maud), Ethel Mary (1886-1939, Arthur Sherwood), Amy, Charles, and Jessie Imogene (1895-1984).

July 10, 1924 - Carroll Times - Sumner Wiggins, well known and honored resident of Cooper, passed away at an early hour Tuesday morning, July 1, following a long period of ill health.

He was Cooper's "grand old man," one whose friends were numbered by the host of acquaintances he had. Mr. Wiggins opened the first store in Cooper following the platting of the town site after the railroad was built, and this business has been conducted for more than forty years. Of late much of the care of the store has been left to his children. He served the people of that locality as postmaster for many years, through which he gained an acquaintance with every person in the region.

The funeral occurred on Thursday. Deceased was the father of Wm. Wiggins of Carroll.

Biographical and historical record of Greene and Carroll counties, Iowa. 1887 - S.W. Wiggins, of the firm of Wiggins Brothers, dealers in general merchandise at Cooper, is a native of Stephenson Co, IL, born March 10, 1844, son of Levi and Betsey (Morton) Wiggins, who were the parents of 7 children, our subject being the third.

He was reared a farmer and obtained his education in the common schools. In Dec 1863 he enlisted in Co K, 16th Wisconsin Infantry. He engaged in the battles of Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and at Atlanta, where he was wounded by a minie ball in his left hand. He was honorably discharged May 30, 1865 and returned to his home in Wisconsin.

In 1869 he was married to Miss Frances Cleveland and to this union were born two daughters - Edith and Ellen Frances. In 1881 he was married to Miss Mary O Smith and they have 3 children - Elsie, Walter and Ethel.

In 1871 Mr Wiggins removed to Hardin Co this state where he lived two years, thence to Wright Co living there until 1875, when he came to this county and settled in Franklin Township on Section 20 where he bought 60 acres of wild land.

In 1882 he came to Cooper and engaged in the mercantile trade, which he has since continued to good success. He has an extensive trade and is always ready to serve his customers. Politically he affiliated with the Republican party. He was postmaster at Cooper from 1882 until Feb 1886; had also served as justice of the peace for several years.
