Herman was born in Vosberg, Pommerania, Germany and was the fourth of five children born to Mary Louise (Ehlert) and Wilhelm Friedrich Belling. He arrived in Baltimore, MD on October 20, 1883 at age 22 with his younger brother William who was 19 at the time. They traveled on the S.S. Ohio from Bremen, Germany.

Portions of the obituary in Merrill newspaper: Herman Belling was Elder and School Board Member of St. John's Church for several years.

"Herman Belling, elder of St. John's Lutheran Church until his resignation 3 weeks ago, died just before noon today after being confined three weeks in bed due to carcinoma of the stomach.
He was born January 19, 1861 at Vosberg, Pommerania, Germany and came to this country in 1883, locating directly in Merrill. Here he was married Nov 15, 1886 to Miss Auguste Schultz, who survives him...Two brothers, William and Carl live at Appleton."

Herman and Auguste had six children: Amanda, Gustave, Herbert, Else, Lydia and Erwin.
