Died after returning home from injuries sustained at Antietam (Sharpsburg, MD). Went to war with 3 brothers (markers at Alta Vista cemetery) and an uncle.

Marker is located between that of his paternal grandmother, Mary Gaines and his paternal aunt, M. (Melinda) Gaines.

Younger brother, HWT Gaines, named one of his sons for his lost brother.
