DAUGHTER OF CARTHAGE PIONEERS
SUCCUMBS IN TEXAS AT AGE OF 95


Mrs. Edna C. Brown, 95, well-known former Carthage resident and sister of Mrs. W. W. Wright and Mrs. Walter E. Carter of Carthage, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday at a nursing home in San Antonio, Texas.
Five years ago Mrs. Brown suffered a fractured hip and had been a semi-invalid since. She was able to be up in a wheel chair until the last several weeks, when she became critically ill.
Born November 2, 1869 in Carthage, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Amos E. Caffee, prominent pioneer residents here. Dr. Caffee came to Carthage from Newark, Ohio in 1866 and for a time was a practicing physician here.

He owned and operated the Caffee Drug Store at the northwest corner of the square, where the Bank of Carthage now is situated. He was a physician and surgeon in the Union army during the Civil War.
The daughter, Edna, was graduated from Carthage High School and from Lindenwood College, St. Charles, MO., where she majored in music.

Edna Caffee was married here to W.H.S. Brown, who at that time was a representative for a candy firm. Later Mr. Brown owned and operated a drug business at Tahlequah, OK. [then Indian Territory]. Mr. and Mrs. Brown returned to Carthage and he was a drug salesman here prior to his death.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Brown made her home for a time in a hotel in California. Her son, Brigadier General Homer C. Brown, U.S. Army, at that time was stationed in Hawaii and Mrs. Brown visited him and his family there.
General Brown was a graduate of West Point and during World War II served in the Philipines. Following retirement he and his family established a home in San Antonio.
General Brown died in February 1950, and since that time his mother had made her home in San Antonio.
Mrs. Brown visited in Carthage frequently until she became a semi-invalid.

Mrs. Brown was baptized in 1870 in Grace Episcopal Church and at the time of her death was the oldest was the oldest in point of membership in the parish.
She was a life member of the Eminence chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving Mrs. Brown are the two sisters, Mrs. W. W. Wright, 1051 South Garrison and Mrs. Walter E. Carter of the Colonial Apartments; a brother, Amos H. Caffee, Chicago; the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Homer C. Brown, San Antonio; a granddaughter, Mrs. Betty Jenkins, Claremont, CA., and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Homer Brown will arrive by plane at 7 p.m., Friday and will be at the home of Mrs. Wright.
The body will arrive Saturday morning in Carthage and will be received at the Knell Mortuary.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Vincent C. Root, rector will officiate. The body will be placed in the Caffee Mausoleum in Park Cemetery.
St. Margaret's Alter Guild, of which Mrs. Brown was long a member, will attend the services in a group.
