OBITUARY:

Caleb Shisler was born August 5, 1836, in Fairfield County, Ohio, departed this life March 18, 1909, aged 72 years, 7 months and 13 days. Deceased lived with his parents in Fairfield County until he was about 16 years of age, removing thence to Deleware County, where the five subsequent years were passed, when at the age of about 21 years he, with his parents, removed to Putnam County and settled at what is now Hartsburg (between Oakwood and Continental). On the 9th day of May, 1861, he was joined in marriage to Elisabeth J. Kretzinger, now deceased. To this union were born three sons and two daughters (eldest daughter deceased). For some time subsequent to his marriage, deceased lived with his parents, but subsequently removed to a farm, previously purchased, about one mile southeast of Hartsburg, where he, with his family, resided until the spring of 1868, when he sold his farm and removed late in the spring to near Bryan, Williams County, Ohio, to a rented farm. He remained there only during the summer, and in the autumn removed to the farm about two miles North of Oakwood which was his home the remainder of his life, except a short residence in Oakwood. Deceased enlisted in the army on the 10th day of February, 1865, and was assigned to Company E, 192 Regiment, O.V.I. The regiment soon after organization and mustered into service, was sent to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and assigned to the second brigade composed of the 191st, 192nd and 193rd Ohio regiments, First Provincial Division. The war closing soon after, the regiment was not retained in the service the full time of enlistment, but was discharged on the 1st day of September, 1865. The life history of the neighbor and friend, the father and ex-soldier, who for so may years was so well and favorably known, is closed by the ruthless hand of death. The funeral service was conducted at Prairie Chapel by Rev. S. J. Colgan.
