Leo Chancey McCune, 95, of East Wenatchee, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 3, 1997, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
Leo was born to the late Walt and Minnie McCune at Des Moines, Iowa, on Oct. 10, 1901. He received his early education at Olivet, Kan., and entered the U.S. Army for World War I.
After his honorable discharge from the service, Leo married Ruby Richardson at Lee Summit, Mo., on Aug. 14, 1923. The couple then settled in the Midwest where they lived until 1937 when they came West settling in Nespelem, where Leo worked on the Grand Coulee Dam project. In 1939 the couple moved to Cashmere where they settled and raised their family.
During World War II, Leo worked at the Edmonds shipyard as a welder and welding instructor. Later he worked as a welder in the irrigation project at Plain, and constructed the two apple box welcome signs at the Cashmere bridge which today welcome visitors to Cashmere.
Over the years Leo operated his own welding shop, was a partner in the Standard Supply Parts Store in Cashmere and retired as a partner in the South End Second Hand Store in Wenatchee.
He was a member of Mission Lodge No. 158 Free and Accepted Masons of Cashmere.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clyde Dunn of Wapato and Mrs. Susan Davis of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Caroll Stokes of Cashmere; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, who died in 1980, and a daughter, Cleo, who died in 1993.
