They were the parents of five children, all of whom were living. They are; Mrs. Cora M. Ballard, Oskaloosa; Francis M., Bussey; Mrs. Alice Richards, Lakonta; Fred, of Lovilla, and Elizabeth Jane Hittle, Lovilla. He is survived by 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also by six brothers, who officiated as pallbearers at the funeral. John, Oskaloosa; William, Beacon; Benton, Lovilla; Fremont, Oskaloosa; James, Des Moines and Benjamin F., Givin. One sister, Mrs. H. W. Stoner, is deceased.
He enlisted in the service of his country October 1, 1862 as a member of Company H., 8th Iowa veteran volunteer infantry and served full-time faithfully and was in the last battle of the war.
He made his home with his daughters; Mrs. Ballard and Mrs. Hittle, the longer time with Mrs. Ballard, where he had been for many months preceding his death. He was in the soldiers home for 17 years, principally at Marshalltown.
Death claimed him Wednesday, March 14, 1923 at the age of 76 years 4 months and 13 days. The funeral service Friday, March 16 is in the charge of Rev. George E. Purdy of the Christian church. Internment in Hennis cemetery.
