As a young man Max was a teacher and he taught in the rural schools of Richland County. Later he was a U.S. Customs Officer in Detroit, Michigan. Then after some time in Michigan, Max and Dorothy, returned to Illinois and Max engaged in farming.
Dorothy was a Registered Nurse and she was employed at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Max gave up farming to accept a position in the West Salem Bank. At the time of his death, he was also serving as Mayor of West Salem.
They were the parents of;
Patricia Elaine Bowers b. 16 Dec. 1933 d.9 Mar 1954
Daniel Clinton Bowers b. 8 Nov 1935 d. 27 Jul 1986
Paul Edmund Bowers b. 31 Dec. 1938
