John Abraham Rhodes was married on Oct. 13, 1817 in Washington County, Kentucky to Louisa Edelen with the consent of her mother, and they were members of Saint Rose Catholic Church in Springfield, where the baptismal entries of their three youngest children survive: Robert (Oct. 19, 1830), Benedict (Oct. 20, 1832), and William Thomas (June 15, 1835). In 1850 he purchased land adjoining Bee Knob, in Big Spring Precinct, Meade County, Kentucky. With an additional purchase in 1853 his property totaled 292 acres.

Son of James Rhodes of Panther Creek in Knottsville Precinct, Daviess County, Kentucky by his wife Mary Willcocks, who were married on June 13, 1792 in Nelson County, Kentucky.

Grandson of Abraham Rhodes (d. 1797) of Tisbury in St Mary's Hundred, St Mary's County, Maryland by his wife Mary Gough [sister of James Gough]; and of William Willcocks (d. 1802) of Cedar Creek, Nelson County, Kentucky, by his wife Phœbe Osborne, who were married on Sept. 20, 1767 at New Providence Presbyterian Church in present-day Union County, New Jersey.

Great-grandson of John Rhodes (d. 1764) of Tisbury and his wife Eleanor Richardson. His great-grandfather William Willcocks (d. 1800), son of Peter Willcocks (d. 1768) and Phœbe Badgeley (d. 1776), was a Judge Advocate during the Revolutionary War era.

His 2nd-great-grandmother Mistress Frances Rhodes (d. 1710), gentlewoman, came to Maryland in 1671 as a companion with Jane, Lady Baltimore (1633-1700) along with the Franciscan missionary Thomas Massey.
