Owensboro Messenger, April 12, 1888, p. 4- The Breckinridge News reports that 'Ben' was killed in his bed about four miles from Big Spring on the Brandenburg Road last Friday; an old bachelor; farmer; his maiden sister lived with him; Jim Hambleton and a man named Scott were arrested as suspects, the former was recently released from the Frankfort penitentiary serving a sentence for grand larceny; see also April 20, p. 4: (charges against Hamilton, Nathan & Thomas Scott were dismissed). May 1, p. 1: Jim Ross, who is suspected of his murder was arrested near Big Spring.
Owensboro Messenger & Examiner, April 26, p. 3, May 17, p. 2, September 13, p. 3: Ross in first trial was sentenced to be hanged, had been granted a new trial on the grounds that there was no colored man in the jury.
Owensboro Messenger, January 12, 1889, p. 4- Ross to be hanged on February 8.
Owensboro Messenger & Examiner, February 14, 1889, p. 1- James Ross was hanged at Brandenburg on February 8, hanging took place in a forty foot enclosure with twenty foot high fences on a hillside near the jail. Ross reported that he participated in the killing, he was there and held the light, the robbery was the idea of Walter Parker. Parker was the one who struck him with the ax. Andy Valentine was also involved in the robbery. Parker was arrested and acquitted and has left the state. Valentine was never arrested.
