Berniece Bacon Bartschi, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 of natural causes. She was 98 years old and died peacefully at her home.

She was born April 26, 1911 to Frank Wilbur and Grace Smart Bacon in Georgetown, Bear Lake County, Idaho.

She married George Edgar Bartschi in the Logan Temple on October 2, 1929. On October 2, 2007, George and Berniece celebrated 78 years of marriage. George passed away on January 1, 2008. They are the parents of four children Dennis C. Bartschi (Lois), M. ReNae Hunter (Benjamin R.), Carol Brandt (Edward J), and G. Grant Bartschi (DeAne). She is survived by her children, 23 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, David C. Bacon; and two sisters, Verna Sparks of St. George and Evelyn Hansen of Logan.

Berniece was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in various positions including Relief Society President for five and 1/2 years, Young Women's President three times, Stake Young Women's Leader, and 30 years as a temple worker in the St. George Temple. Berniece has always been an organizer.

By the time she was 13 years old, she was helping her father in the grocery store owned by the family; and by the age of 14 she was driving the big Dodge truck to make deliveries from Georgetown to Stringtown.

For most of her life she worked along with raising her family to supplement the family income. She worked for her father in the grocery store until she and George purchased it from him.

Later, after moving to Pocatello, Idaho, she worked for J.C. Penneys, State Hardware, and Sterling and Warren, a grocery warehouse. She was a very energetic person, and even after her children were married and had homes of their own, she could work them "under the table."

Behind her back she was called "the white tornado." Late into their 70's she and George would go into the forest and cut enough wood for their fireplace to see them through the winter, load it into their pick-up and take it to their St. George home.

She lived to serve others. She was known far and wide for her whole wheat bread and carrot cake which she made until she was well into her 90's to share with friends and family. She was constantly on the lookout for anyone who needed help in some way - a ride to the grocery store, to church, or who needed help in some other way.

As George grew older and weaker, she was his constant companion, supporting him in all of his needs. She has been the backbone of the family, the manager of the finances, the person you could count on to give you good advice and to stand by you when you needed her.

She was frugal in her needs, but generous in her praise of others and with her funds. She deemed her family, her faith, and her friends as the most important accomplishments of her life. She was faithful and exact in keeping the commandments of God. Her integrity and example will be remembered and respected by all who knew her.

We know she is having a happy reunion with her husband, George, her parents and four sisters as well as with other friends and family who have preceded her to heaven.
