Orphaned at the age of 6, Henry lived with various family members after his parents died, including the family of his half-sister Elizabeth Mihlbauer in Wisconsin and the family of his half-brother Herman Hein in Chicago.

Henry enlisted into military service in May 1917 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. He served in the 128th Infantry with his brother Robert Hein in Europe during World War I. In one particular selfless act, Henry was able to save his brother's life by giving Robert his own gas mask when both had been exposed to mustard gas. At another time during a period of heavy shelling, Henry had been involuntarily separated from his unit and his remaining family had been notified of his "death." When Henry returned home to his family, it is said that several sisters fainted, thinking that they were seeing a ghost! During his military service, Henry earned two purple heart medals and was discharged on 12 April 1919 at Camp Custer, Michigan.

After returning to Wisconsin after the war, Henry married Theda Florence (Keepers) Hein Schallenberg and together they had Virginia (Hein) Gosling . Henry and Theda later divorced.

Henry stayed in the midwest area until about 1926 when he settled in the Los Angeles area.

It was in Los Angeles that he met his new bride. On 24 September 1930, Henry and Cherry C (Starr) Hein married and together they had the following children:
Henry G Hein, Jr
Roberta Ruth (Hein) Kistler
Georgia Helen (Hein) Campbell Conway

Except for two years during World War II (during which time he and his family lived in Waco, Texas), Henry lived within Los Angeles County, California until his death in 1978.
