Betty J. Grigsby, 79, of Richmond, the wife of Bill Grigsby, passed away Friday May 29, 2009 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center.
Betty was a native of Hazard, KY. She received her master's degree from Miami University at Oxford, and did her undergraduate work at the University of Kentucky. She was a retired educator. She began her teaching career in Perry County, KY, before moving to Hamilton, OH, where she worked for the school system as a teacher, librarian and a counselor. She then became principal of the Madison County Vocational Center. She finally retired after 37 years. She was an active co-owner of the Chestnut Street Antique Mall in Berea, KY. She was also a member of the N.E.A and the K.E.A. Betty was a charter member of the Unity Baptist Church, where she was the media director, member of W.M.U., and also organized the library.
In addition to her husband Bill, she is survived by her granddaughter Amy Beth (Rob) Kennedy, great grandchildren Madeline and James Kennedy,a daughter-in-law Cherilyn Nelson and her dear friends, Clayberta Gamble, Mary Alice England, Lucille Brewer and K Gamble, as well as her adoptive family at the Unity Baptist Church on Barnes Mill Road. She will be dearly missed and was loved by all who knew her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ida Gay Gabbard, and one son James Leslie Grigsby.
Funeral services for Betty Grigsby will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday June 2, 2009 at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Dr. Dennis Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at the A.R. Dyche Memorial Cemetery in London, Kentucky. Pallbearers will be K Gamble, Jim Barnes, Larry Morgan, Dennis Roark, Fred Dodd and Wesley Frazier. Serving as honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of the Unity Baptist Church, Peggy Weston, Judy Dodd and Joni Webber.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. on Monday June 1, 2009 at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.
