John Childs, 76, of Muncie operated his own stock yard

John "Jack" Childs, 76, of Muncie died March 5, 2007 at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, following a long battle with illness.

Funeral services were held Friday at Garden View Funeral Home, Muncie, with Pastor Gregg Parris officiating. Burial was at the Mooreland Cemetery in Mooreland.

Mr. Childs began a career as a livestock buyer with Stadler Packing Co. In 1959, he moved to Muncie and with his father-in-law, Raymond Conwell, and bought the Muncie Commission Company at the Marhoefer Stock yards. When the stock yards closed, he opened his own stock yards in northern Delaware County, which he operated until his illness forced the closing in 2002.

He was a graduate of Vernon High School and Purdue University. He served in the veterinarian branch of the Air Force in Florida, taught high school and served as a 4-H leader in Mooreland. He was a Christian and served in many capacities in local ministries.

Born at Vernon on April 10, 1930, he was the son of Howard and Mary Amick Childs. He married Beverely Conwell July 6, 1957. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Cathy Mickler of Muncie, Tamara Doorly of Warrenton, Va., and Kim Waites of Rutherfordton, N.C.; six grandchildren, Brittany and Jennifer Mickler, Renee, Joshua, Meika Doorly and Gabrielle Waites; and a sister, Ruth Davee of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two uncles, Robert and Chester Amick.

Memorials may be made to "The New Interurban" for transportation to dialysis.
