Born in Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, Mary was the daughter of James and Mary Polly Swena. On their westward migration, the Winder family settled in Bureau County, Illinois for a time. It is there that Mary was married to Alexander McQuiston, son of David Harper and Mary Davidson McQuiston of Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania on August 11, 1859. Alexander had left his family in Pennsylvania for better opportunities in the midwest. After their marriage, the young couple moved to Kansas and finally settled in Monmouth in Shawnee County.
Mary and Alexander were the parents of three children: Mary Alice (Lovell) (Mary was sent east to Pennsylvania relatives shortly after the death of her sister Ida), Eddy Arthur, and Ida Viola McQuiston. After Mary's death in April 1886, Alexander married again in October of that year to Susan Newman.
